But if it has an LS swap, is it still an Alpina rep?

I don’t like it when my Bimmers aren’t in full resolution.

And people wonder why some of us don’t really appreciate the ubiquitous chevy small block swapped into anything and everything.

People decry the reliability of wankels in RX7s, and tout the reliability of SBCs in their place... but what grounds are there against a BMW Inline-6?

If you can’t afford to maintain or rebuild a BMW Inline-6, you really can’t afford to maintain the rest of a BMW E24 6-series, let alone a rarer Alpina with custom parts.

I’m sorry but I see no point in LS swapping any non-Chevrolet car. The engine is for me 90% of the car soul, and you want to complete change that, in a already very rare and perfectly balanced car.

I see some sense in some swaps, like a electric drivetrain in a classic DS instead of that dreadful diesel, or that ICON VW Bus, but replace a damn fine engine like the BMW I6, especially one tuned by Alpine, for me is a big downgrade.

You have damn fine taste in cars, the E24 is very handsome coupe, but if you really want to do a LS-swap, go for a more mainstream one, like a 628 CSi and fit the Alpina wheels/bodykit/stickers, not a classic like a original Alpina B10.

I must say that everything said above doesn’t matter for me if the car is very damaged or unsavable.

So sexy. That green one is perfection. I had a line on a ‘77 Alpina 630 in the PNW some years back, I was told it was sitting in a barn (no kidding) with a locked up differential. That lead dried up, but I dreamed about it a lot.

I will never understand why people want a car famous for the rotatory engine itself and swap it for a LS.

People who want to replace a rotary haven’t experienced a good rotary. “Hey, let’s rip out the engine this chassis is designed around and replace it for something heavier with half the character."

Having driven a few LS powered vehicles, I don’t get the hype. Sure they make a decent amount of power out of a smallish package, but they just don’t have the character of most of the engines they replace.

For me 90% of the LS swaps people do downgrades the car. Classic Jaguars and Mazdas are the biggest victims.

Sure they are more efficient than the original engine, and for sure are more reliable, but I guess I am too old for my age, because I don’t see much fun in big amounts of power, and I’m also a sadistic because the LS swap is a easy solution. I just prefer to improve the efficienty and reliability of the original engine to keep as much as possible the original character of the car, and if I would do a swap, at least I would replace for one of the same brand.

did the alpinas have an auto like most most of their other conversions? i feel the e24 will always be better off with the MT.

Nor do I, yet they do often.

I always wonder why they don’t buy corvettes in the first place... then I wonder what a 20B turbo would be like in a gorgeous early C3 corvette, because Aerovette and other projects tried wankel rotaries back then...

The LS is very compact for its power. Very cheap to mod and initial costs makes way more power than the stock 215hp 635csi has lots of transmission options that bolt right up. Simple as heck to swap in to lots of cars. I understand wanting to have the charm of the original I6 but 215hp is pathetic if there were some cheap compact BMW 6 cylinder that would provide at least 350hp without forced induction I might go that route.

My idea is to replicate the Alpina looks on a cheap broken down E24 and restore it on a budget.

power. the 635csi had 215hp in a 3500lb car. Is slow character?

Which is an incredibly dull and boring character compared to a good straight six. They just have power, that’s what they have going for them. They sound decent, but compared to a good straight 6, they sound like trash. I guess maybe living in small town USA has ruined the sound of the LS motor, since every body and their brother cousin straight pipes their Z71, but to me it sounds meh. Especially below 6.0L.

If you know what you are doing, you can rebuild a rotary cheaper and quicker than an LS. They aren’t that complex. Actually, they aren’t complex at all. It’s certainly cheaper than swapping in a heavier engine. Plus, your fuel economy isn’t going to improve by much at all, especially if you keep the factory gear ratio.

And a new-for-’83 Camaro Z28 with the 305 High-Output V8 had all of 190 horsepower, and in full dress weighed ~3400.

That was considered hot for the day.

Also, you aren’t counting the M 635CSi... which had 282hp, and was introduced in ‘83 also. An Alpina B6 could be based on either one.

K there are how many M6 made? The Ls motor can make 500hp very easily.
The camaro is crap with that 305. which is not a 305 and shares nothing with the LS. add 100lbs and 25 hp to the camaro and it would still suck like the 635csi.

215 hp is more than enough for this cars. The M635i has 286 hp, and if you want power and a modern engine, the N52 from the 130i is NA

You should know the downsides of the rotatory which, as I said, is the main reason why the RX7 is famous, before buying one. If you want a V8, get a Corvette or a Jaguar. It’s the same thing as getting a brand new Corvette, and swapping the V8 for the V6TT from the GTR since the Japanese engine is more efficient and tunable. It just doesn't make sense (for me, remember it's my opinion). If I want a V8, I will get a Corvette. If I want a I6, I will get a M3 and if I want a V6 I will get a GTR, simple as that.

pretty sure the corvette is much more efficient than a GTR.
